Weekend HS Basketball Slate
An early season titanic girls basketball battle and a handful of key conference matchups highlight this weekend’s high school basketball schedule in Southwestern Kansas.
A Top-10 clash awaits tonight in Class 6A, as No. 2 Liberal heads to the DCHS Field House to take on No. 10 Dodge City in the Western Athletic Conference opener for both teams. That contest may set the tone for whom will be the team to watch in the WAC.
The Hi-Plains League won’t be short on interesting matchups before the holiday break. Stanton County heads to Lakin, while Elkhart tangles with Cimarron in the Bluejays' gym.
The Great West Activities Conference will open league play as well, and all eyes will be on each conference tilt. One of the boys-girls doubleheaders to watch will be Scott Community hosting Hugoton. It will be last varsity contests at the high school gym, as the newly built gym at the middle school will be the home court for the varsity beavers for the rest of the foreseeable future. Add to that the fact that the two No. 5 teams in Class 3A - the Lady Beavers and Eagle boys - will both get tested right out of the chute in league play.
Also, Goodland opens GWAC play at Holcomb, and Ulysses will tangle with Colby in what should be a pair of solid contests.
