Scott Community draws top seed in 3A Colby Sub-State
Eight area Class 3A volleyball teams in Southwestern Kansas will be playing at two separate Sub-State tournaments this weekend, with one goal in mind - get to the state tournament.
Scott Community (31-3) drew the No. 1 seed in the Colby Sub-State Tournament, and is the favorite to take the Sub-State title and the berth to the Class 3A State Volleyball Championships at the Hutchinson Sports Arena that goes along with it.
Scott Community will play the first match of the day at 1 pm against eighth-seeded Hugoton (14-22), followed by No. 4 seed and host Colby (25-11) taking on fifth-seeded Holcomb (22-14).
Lakin (27-8) drew the No. 2 seed and will face seventh-seeded Goodland (18-17), while the final match of the opening round will put the only two non-GWAC teams in the draw against each other, as third-seeded Phillipsburg (26-10) faces off with No. 6 seed Norton Community (18-16).
Two Hi-Plains League teams - Cimarron and Southwestern Heights - will play in the Hoisington Sub-State. Ironically, they will play at the same time, but not against each other, in their opening matches.
Cimarron (19-14) drew the No. 4 seed and faces host Hoisington (14-22) in the second match of the day on the West Court. The winner gets either top-seeded Beloit (34-3) or No. 8 seed Larned (2-33) in the semifinal.
Southwestern Heights (9-25) will play in the second match on the East Court against third-seeded Lyons (28-9). The winner faces either Thomas Moore Prep-Marian (31-6) or Russell (6-26) in the semifinals.
The Sub-State Championship will be contested on the West Court. Hoisington is one of a few Sub-State sites utilizing two courts for the tournament.
