Saturday VB recap: Buffs take Maize invite
Garden City posted a 5-0 mark, dropping just one set, on their way to claiming the title at the Maize Invitational on Saturday.
The Class 6A No. 6 Buffs (12-0) swept past Valley Center, Hutchinson and host Maize to take the top seed in pool play, then beat Derby in a two-set sweep to advance to the tournament title match. In the championship, Garden City rallied from a set down to beat Kapaun, 20-25, 25-18, 25-21 to take the title.
Senior setter Remi Vargas became the second Buffalo player this season to achieve a career milestone, collecting her 2,000th assist in her career. Earlier this season, senior outside hitter and Creighton commit Reagan Karlin reached the 1,000 kills mark.
In other volleyball action from Saturday:
- Maize South beat host Liberal to win the 2019 Liberal Volleyball Tournament Championship, 25-16, 25-23.
Liberal won the Red Pool with a 3-0 mark, then needed three sets to get past Colby in the Gold Bracket semifinal. Maize South swept past Borger, TX, 25-16, 25-6, in the other semifinal.
Colby finished third, after sweeping Borger in the 3rd place match, 25-12, 25-20.
Dodge City needed three sets to get past Meade in the 5th place match, 21-25, 26-24, 25-16; while Hugoton claimed 7th place after beating Southwestern Heights, 25-12, 25-18.
