KWCA Rankings - GC holds onto No. 1 in Class 6A
After winning six of seven dual matches at the Battle of the Best Duals in Colorado over the weekend, the Garden City boys wrestling squad held onto its No. 1 ranking in Class 6A, according to the latest rankings released by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association.
And the Garden City girls team is getting some notice, too.
After being the top-performing team at the Valley Center Tournament this past Saturday, the Buffaloes have three ranked wrestlers in the All-Class individual rankings - Chole Sullivan (No. 5 at 106 pounds), Anjelina Serrano (No. 4 at 130 pounds) and Camila Estevez (No. 5 at 235 pounds).
Only one other area wrestler appears in the latest girls rankings - Lakin's Isabelle Ortiz, who currently is the No. 1-ranked wrestler at 109 pounds.
On the boys' side, the Buffaloes have eight individuals ranked in the Top 6 of their respective weight classes, led by Jacob Holt, who is ranked No, 1 at 145 pounds. Other GC individuals who earned rankings are Dakota Smith (4th at 113), Ryan Heiman (4th at 120), Silas Pinera (2nd at 126), Eric Dominguez (3rd at 138), Josh Janis (3rd at 152), Jared Arrelano (4th at 160) and Matt Smith (6th at 220).
Dodge City is ranked 7th as a team, led by five individual wrestlers ranked in the Top 6. They include Jashon Taylor, who is ranked No. 1 at 170 pounds. Damien Mendez is ranked 2nd at 120 pounds, Garrett Edwards is ranked 3rd at 145 pounds, Marcelino Otero is ranked 5th at 152 pounds, and Ruben Reyes is ranked 5th at 160 pounds.
Liberal's Tryalian Juarez is also in the rankings, currently ranked 6th at 145 pounds.
Scott City, who was in the first set of preseason team rankings, is currently ranked 6th in Class 4A, buoyed by three individual grapplers ranked in the Top 6 of their respective weight classes. The Beavers are led by senior Kaden Watson, who is top-ranked at 138 pounds, and Justus McDaniel, who is the top-ranked wrestler at 145 pounds. Zach Rohrbough is ranked 6th at 126 pounds.
Ulysses has two wrestlers who are ranked - Quentin Padua, who is ranked 2nd at 106 pounds, and Ayston Perez, who is top-ranked at 285.
In Class 3-2-1A, Cobly and Goodland both had strong weekends and are in the Top 10. The Trojans are ranked 2nd to top-ranked Norton, while Goodland enters the rankings at No. 10.
Three area wrestlers are top-ranked in their weight classes in Class 3-2-1A - DJ Knox of Goodland (106), Tate Seabolt of Cimarron (170) and Hagan Booi of Colby (195).
Booi is among five Trojan grapplers who are ranked in the Top 6 of their weight classes. Tyler Voss is ranked 3rd at 120 pounds, Konnor Griffin is ranked 4th at 145 pounds, Cade Lanning is ranked 5th at 170 pounds, and Declan Ryan is ranked 5th at 285 pounds.
Goodland has two other grapplers ranked - Octavio Gonzales is ranked 5th at 113 and Dawson Houlb is ranked 5th at 195. Wichita County's Jesse Gardner is also ranked 5th at 160 pounds.
