Hugoton girls close late for win over Colby

Updated: Feb 10, 2020

The Hugoton girls knew that if they were going to make noise in Class 3A basketball this season, they would have to get it done against the likes of Scott Community and Colby.

Less than 24 hours after knocking off the Lady Beavers, the Lady Eagles took care of the other team on the list, and moved into a tie for first in the Great West Activities Conference.

Mikyn Hamiln scored a game-high 24 points to lead Hugoton (5-1, 10-4) to a 37-33 win over Class 3A No. 6 Colby (5-1, 14-2) on Saturday in Hugoton.

The Lady Eagles - much like their win over No. 2 Scott Community on Friday - closed impressively, scoring the final four points of the game to break a 33-all tie and claim the victory.

MacKenzie Dodson leads Colby with 12 points off the bench. including all seven points the Lady Eagles scored in the final quarter, while Brooklyn Jones added 10.

While Hugoton outscores Colby in the fourth, 11-7, Mikyn Hamiln was held to just two free throws in the final stanza. Jordyn Beard, who finished with six points, scored all of her points in the final eight minutes, while McKenna Hamlin, who was held scoreless for much of the game, hit a 3-pointer to add to the total.

Hugoton will host Garden City on Tuesday, while Colby will be back in action on Friday at home against Scott Community.
