GBB Finals: Hugoton handles business in opener

The Hugoton Lady Eagles opened their 2019-20 high school basketball season with a road trip to Springfield, Colorado to participate in the annual RL Ballard Tournament. Their bracket featured two teams that are state ranked in Class 1A in Colorado.
However, the Lady Eagles opened with a strong statement on Friday, beating No. 4 South Baca, 57-31, to advance to the Championship Game of the tournament. They will face the host team, Class 1A No. 7 Springfield, in the 4:30 pm Mountain Time contest.
Dodge City 69, Junction City 22
Kisa Unruh scored a career-high 32 points and set a Lady Demon record with eight made 3-point baskets as Dodge City opened their season with a strong win over Junction City.
The Lady Demons, who have won three straight and eight of nine games against Junction City, scored the game's first 25 points and never looked back.
Unruh scored 28 of her 32 points in the first half, helping Dodge City open up a 46-15 halftime lead.
Goodland 38, Syracuse 32
In a game full of first-half runs and defensive stands in the second half, the Cowgirls overcame a slow start and picked up a road win over the Bulldogs, their first win over Syracuse in three seasons.
Goodland, who snapped a seven-game overall losing skid, was paced by Kerrigan Rudolph, who had a team-high eight points.
Syracuse jumped out to a 16-5 first-quarter lead, only to have Goodland crawl back into the game and tie the game at the half, 18-all.
Carly Kullot led the Lady Bulldogs with 15 points and a career-high eight rebounds. Syracuse used their foul shooting to stay in the game, making 12-of-15 from the line.
Cimarron 54, Ulysses 27
Emily Acton scored a game-high 18 points while Clara Bartlett and freshman McKayla Miller added 11 each for the Bluejays as they opened the season with a strong win over the Lady Tigers.
Clara Garcia led Ulysses with 10 points.
