Dodge City holds off Garden City to capture Bell
It's befitting of two schools who are intense competitors and rivals to have more than one trophy game or match. As it turns out, Thursday night's wrestling dual between Garden City and Dodge City produced a first for the longtime mat rivals.
The Hatchet and The Bell are held by the team to the East at the same time, for the first time ever.
Class 6A No. 5 Dodge City held off a late charge, and picked up a key shutout win on the mat in the final bout of the evening to secure a 38-33 dual match win over No. 3 Garden City at the DCHS Fieldhouse.
The dual came down to the 145-pound bout, which was the last on the varsity card for the evening. No. 3-ranked Garrett Edwards ended up drawing the closing assignment for the Red Demons, and delivered a 5-0 shutout of Erick Dominguez - who in the last individual rankings, was the fourth-ranked wrestler at 138 pounds - to account for the final margin.
Garden City had all the momentum entering that final bout, scoring three pinfalls and a decision to post 21 straight team points and pull within 35-33 on the scoreboard. Silas Pineda (120), Ryan Heiman (126), Diego Hernandez (132), and Jacob Holt (138) picked up the key wins for GC in the run.
Dodge City bounced out to a solid lead by winning four of the first five bouts - including a forfeit win - taking an early 24-3 lead. Those three points for the Buffaloes came in what could have been the match of the night, as Alexavier Rodriguez held on for a 3-2 decision over No. 3-ranked Jashon Taylor.

Girls - Garden City picks up win over Dodge City
In what was the first official dual match between the two rivals, Garden City managed to get key wins throughout and picked up a 33-18 win at Dodge City.
Eight of the nine bouts contested in the dual ended in pinfall, including 123-pounder Anjelina Serrano of Garden City, who picked up the quickest win of the night - male or female - with a 13-second pinfall of Anahi Lopez of Dodge City.
Jasin Beltran (101), Autumn Perez (136) and Jolehe Armanez (155) scored pins for the Red Demons. The Buffaloes also had pins from Anahi Cervantes (101), Chloe Sullivan (109), Esmerelda Corado (116) and Belle Hernandez (123)
The lone bout that went the distance took place at one of the bouts at 155 pounds, where Garden City's Alondra Guzman won by a 9-2 decision over Ashley Arroyo.
One unique note about the dual - three weight classes had multiple matches. It's a move being used statewide to get girls on the mat in competition without a tournament setup.
