Dodge City FB to host unique celebration Oct. 8
You don't always see a high school team honor an old college team, but that's what Dodge City football is doing at its next home game against Hays on October 8.
That's because it's the 30th anniversary of the final season of college football for St. Mary's of the Plains College, and what a season it happened to be.
Unlike some programs which go down in a fizzle, the last season for St. Mary's of the Plains ended in a different spectrum.. In 1991, the team went out in style, sharing the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference league title, and capping one of the most dominant defensive runs in college football.
In its last three seasons, the Cavaliers led all of NAIA in scoring defense, and the team that started that run, in 1989, set the NAIA record for scoring defense, a record which still stands. It should surprise no one that the Cavaliers won or shared the KCAC title all three seasons.
All SPCC in attendance will be honored, and alumni will be able to sit in a special section of Memorial Stadium. Details are also being finalized for a post-game tailgate party for the alumni. Souvenir posters and shirts will also be available at the Stadium team Store commemorating the event.
