DC Boys Soccer finishes 3rd at 6A State
Updated: Nov 13, 2019
The Dodge City Red Demon boys soccer squad wanted more, but they found a way to come out with a medal at the Class 6A Boys Soccer State Championships at the Hummer Sports Complex Soccer Stadium in Topeka this past weekend.
After suffering a 1-0 loss to eventual state champion Olathe West (20-1), the Red Demons took advantage of two fouls in the penalty area - one converted on a penalty kick by Erik Martinez 8 minutes into the match, and another on a PK by Eduardo Rojas to close out a three-goal second half - and used tough defense to beat Wichita-East, 4-0, to finished 3rd at the State Final Four.
Martinez cashed in on a foul in the attack area in the game's eighth minute to give Dodge City (17-4) its only goal of the half. Halfway through the second half, Alan Lopez found the back of the net, followed by Mervedi Nkonglo converting a Diego Oliveras feed for another tally, and capped off by Rojas's PK conversion for the final margin.
The win was the 90th in the career of Dodge City head coach Saul Hernandez.
