Boys Soccer: Dodge City rolls, Liberal, GC fall in playoffs

The Class 6A Boys Soccer playoff games on Tuesday were played in not-so-ideal conditions, but that did not prevent teams from producing some good soccer. Or prevent the third-seeded Dodge City Red Demons from continuing their fantastic season.

Alan Lopez had a natural hat trick, Mervedi Ngonkolo had two goals and an assist and Jose Holguin had two first-half tallies to help the Red Demons roll past Hutchinson, 10-0, and into the West Region #3 Final against Wichita-Southeast on Thursday.

Dodge City (14-3) scored five goals in each half and were not threatened in the contest by a game Hutchinson (6-10-1) squad to pull off the win at Memorial Stadium. They will host Wichita-Southeast (11-2-4) on Thursday at 5:30 pm.

Irwin Macias scored the first goal of the game, then Holguin added two straight to grow the lead to 3-0 in the first half. Ngonkolo and Carlos Reyan added tallies to close out the half.

Ngonkolo and Juan Herrera also scored in the second half, along with Lopez, who had all three of his goals in the second 40 minutes.

While Dodge City was advancing to a Region Final, both Liberal and Garden City ended up having their seasons come to an end.

The Redskins (11-5-1) could not take advantage of being at home, falling to Lawrence-Free State (9-6-2), 3-1, while the Buffaloes (7-9-1) lost a road battle at Wichita-Heights (13-3-1), 3-0.
