Boys BB: Yager, Stoppel have huge nights in key wins
Jackson Stoppel and Hunter Yager helped their teams pick up key boys basketball wins on Tuesday by scorching the nets - big time.
First, Yager lit up the scoreboard for 42 points - 31 in the first half - to help Scott Community handle Ulysses, 76-56. Yager hit 10 3-pointers in the game, and outscored Ulysses on his own in the first half, 31-30.
Yager led three Beavers (4-4 GWAC, 9-9 overall) in double figures with his career night. Josh Rosin and Parker Gooden each added 10 points for Scott Community.
Lance Walker led the Tigers (3-5 GWAC, 6-12 overall) with 15 points, while Aaron Galindo added 11.
Holcomb 68, Hugoton 60
Stoppel, in the meantime, scored 20 of his 31 points in the second half as Holcomb went on the road and pulled off the win at Hugoton.
The Longhorns (4-4 GWAC, 12-6 overall) used a 14-2 run to take the early lead, and withstood charge after charge from the Eagles (13-4 overall). Stoppell keyed the second-half surge for Holcomb, who shot 21-of-39 for the game, and made 19-of-23 attempts from the free-throw line.
In other boys basketball action on Tuesday:
Garden City 68, Dodge City 54
Azavier Williams scored 26 points on 10-of-16 shooting, including five 3-pointers, while Tae Rosales added 17 as the Buffaloes pulled away in the second half to beat the Red Demons.
Garden City (9-9) hit 14-of-24 (58.3 percent) from the field in the third and fourth quarters, outscoring Dodge City (4-14) in the second half, 44-29, to pull away for the win.
John Johnson scored 13 points and grabbed 14 rebounds, while Cooper Loll added 11 for Dodge City.
Colby 62, Goodand 36
Calvin Stapp led three Eagles in double figures with 15 points as Colby (6-2 GWAC, 12-6 overall) to take the win over Goodland. The Cowboys (0-8, 2-15) were led by Henry Cole's 14 points.
